Small World BBQ with Black Squirrel

So the most recent post was about Matt's (my) secound cousin being a rapper. My cousin is part of a rap 'supergroup' named La Coka Nostra. Members of La Coka Nostra used to be in another Rap group called House of Pain (of which I was a fan of, one hundred years ago).

Jump to today, at a BBQ with our friends Vincent and Ann Laure. They have visitors in town from France, including Vincent's childhood friend Guillaume. So Guillaume, Tomas, and Elodie go last night to see a concert in Baltimore. The name of the band is Battles. The Drummer of the band is the former Drummer of Helmet.

So I was on Wikopedia tonight reading the entry for House of Pain. House of Pain worked with another group long ago for a song on a movie soundtrack. Who did they make the song with?

I think it's kind of interesting.
What about the black squirrel? Is there a connection? No. We just saw a goofy black squirrel while enjoying our BBQ.

Merci pour le barbecue, citoyens de la France.

My Cousin..Movie Star...Rapper

Boston Accent: Zo I wahz uzin my Chadge Cahd fah thah Gahden Bah at Peah Fowah, when I heard my guzzinznow a muuvy stah.

Translation to English: So I was using my Charge Card for the Garden Bar at Pier Four (Restaurant) when I heard my cousin is now a movie star.

Actually, that’s not how I heard it but a Boston accent is fun. But the point is my 2nd cousin is soon to be in a big huge Hollywood movie (out this September) that is set in Boston. Actually, the specifc place in Boston is Dorchester. Dorchester is the same neighborhood that produced NKTOB and Mark Wahlberg. My Momma moved there from South Boston whilst younger and my peoples (relatives) are still keeping it real by living in both places. BTW, Aimee has a childhood story about NKOTB that I've heard about 11 times. Maybe she will tell you about it. She is obviously scarred by her missed attempt at seeing them in concert. I digresss......

The movie is Directed by Ben Afflack and stars his brother Casey Afflack. We are talking Hollywood, baby. Big Time, baby.

And we aren’t talking about some small, black and white Indy Movie featuring an unemployed mime named Carl who falls in love with a red balloon. We are talking Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman, Casey Affleck and….. my cousin Georgie...ooops, I mean Slaine.

See, Slaine is also an up-n-coming rapper. You heard right..Jay Zee, watch out, sucka! Not only that, but he's associated with House Of Pain. Yes, THAT House of Pain. The best part about this whole story is that one of my relatives is part of House of Pain's Posse.

This is where I become impressed, because I todally used to ROCK OUT to their cassette tape in my Subaru when I was 20 years old. House of Pain is now known as La Coka Nostra..nice. They are a Super Rap Group of which Slaine is a member: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Coka_Nostra .

I will end this post now. More to come about Slaine later. Meanwhile, here's the good stuff

1.) The Movie Trailer. You see Slaine about half way through. Quite awesome. Good Job George.

2.) For my dear wife Aimee, who never did get to see that NKOTB concert for which she and her mother camped out all night for tickets but moved out of town before the concert. Hang Tough, Dear wife, Hang Tough indeed!

3.) For me.... Old Skool House of Pain. I warn you before playing the following video: You may want to move your chair out of the way so you can, in fact, Jump Around. I just hope I don't throw my back out....who cares..let's go...

Knees are Necessary-Especially ACLs

Well, I am 2 weeks and 2 days out of my knee surgery. I hobbled around slowly at first but now you can barely detect a limp (unless I'm really tired!).
Thank you to everyone who helped out, inquired about or gave me personal testimonials!
Here's a chronological picture show:

Day 2-Saturday Ready to head out to lunch with Julie, too bad I can't completely straighten OR bend my knee!
Day 3- Sunday I got to take my brace off and soon my bandages. I'm swollen but walking on my own!

Circa Day 4-Bandages off but still really swollen
Fast forward to Day 16- All is well and I'm looking a little more normal. Let's face it, I was never going to be any sort of knee model-before or after!!

Soon I will be running, jumping and flailing like I did before. Gotta love modern medicine (now if they could only do something about the pain meds ;) )

Bad Luck and Fire Prevention: A 20 Year Old Story

When I was 16, I went to a boarding/prep school for one year. One year at a prep school was about one year longer I needed to experience in order to learn I didn’t belong in a prep school. I wasn’t from wealth, nor intelligent, nor sophisticated, nor a deep thinker, or even edgy (not even mildly irritable). In fact, I leaned towards not thinking at all. I existed somewhere between possessing the ability to speak the English language and mild chacteristics of retardation. My gift was unique - the divine ability to get myself into ridiculous situations.

This particular situation took place in the prep school dorm, in the dead of the New England Winter. Each dorm was organized by floors as dormitories tend to. Each floor had about 30-40 boys, along with a Teacher who lived at the end of each hall, to supervise.

Each school night, ‘lights out’ was at 10:00 pm. This meant you had to be inside your dorm room (but didn’t have to be asleep). Unlike the studious, intelligent, and deep-thinking students who were either sleeping to rest their special brains or reading books to nurture them, I could be found in the hallway, goofing around. The dorm hallway was the place to be a goofball. For example, there was the time a student found a poop-laden set of Fruit-of-The-Looms and chased people around. I also recall a spontaneous group-sing-and-dance of this song , led by a kid named Gardy, short for Gardner. While the card-carrying Nerd studied Georges-Louis Le Sage’s views on Kinetic Theory, I watched kids from Darien light their farts on fire. You may scoff but both activities celebrated the study of PHYSICS.

One night, some of the hall dwellers thought it might be awesome to remove the fire extinguisher from its special box on the wall. This fire extinguisher would save lives. For us, it would pass time. All we needed to know that it was red and shiny, and could shoot water (this wasn’t the foamy type extinguisher). One of the older students challenged me to try it out..like to see if it works. This was trivial of course. A low-level challenge, No problem. So, with my index finger, I gently pressed down on the lever. The result was the weakest stream of water possible.

Sad. Even the tiny droplets of water seemed to pity me. Emotionally wounded, I brought my hand down on it with the power of Thor's Hammer.

Had it not been for my special gift (see paragraph one), the story would end here. Obviously, the second push on the Fire Extinguisher resulted in a strong stream of water, capable of bringing down a small adult human. The story should have ended in only a wet ceiling. The tragic flaw was all about positioning.

In addition to having fire extinguishers, each floor had fire alarms. Had I been positioned a foot away from my spot in any direction, the full force of the water spewing from the fire extinguisher would have missed the circuit of the fire ALARM, located on the hall ceiling. In my case it was a direct hit.

The next few moments happened very quickly:

...huge stream of water towards ceiling..
…All Electrical Power out in entire building.
...Everything goes completely black..
..The sound of a Screeching fire alarm screams out…buuureeep buuureeep…
…Emergency lights turn on at the end of the hallway…
…Complete Chaos…

If you’ve ever seen a car chase on TV, you wonder why the criminal tends to flee, even though there are 20 police cars and a helicopter in pursuit along with about 27 witnesses. And he left his wallet at the scene of the crime. I understand. I fled the scene immediately.

As I ran down the hall, time slowed to a crawl. The hall became as long as four football fields. Each step I took felt like 20 seconds. Out of the corner of my vision, I saw heads peeking out of dorm room doors. Some students yelled. Some laughed and pointed. The most troubling image I have is that of The Angry Nerd. I had disturbed the Nerd Cosmos. The Nerd Directive was out of whack. The Upset Nerd Face is something you never want innocent children to see.

Maybe I would just keep running into the mountains and live off the land until the Statute of Limitations on mistakenly activating fire alarms had expired. Or I could change my identity, become a Circus Carnie and develop into an expert at the Art of Tent Assembly. Once I left the building, I decided against it, as I was a bit tired. As I looked around, I saw the whole building empty out in into a field, on a cold night.

The Fire Marshall of the School was out in front with a Walkie Talkie and a badge. He corralled the students to gather by floor to line up and be counted. I walked towards the area where the students from my floor were lined up. I stood next to the students over whispers of ‘you’re dead’ or ‘I know it’s you, #&^$hole.’ I felt a strange feeling on the back of my head. It was the Angry Nerd Glare…or maybe it was an Angry Nerd’s Bad Breath. Regardless, I could no longer line up with any floor. I was an Outlaw… a Dead Man Walking. I was in my own line now.

The reason why I wouldn't grow up to be a career criminal was evident in my next move. I knew I was cooked, so I marched in front of the entire population of the dorm, which was trying to keep warm, and in front of the Fire Marshall I basically shouted:

"I did it! I was me I tells ya!"

The Fire Marshall wasn't the kind of Teacher who understands kids. He basically said "You're dead," just like the kids who yelled at me.

The rest of the story is not very interesting. My punishment was basically to walk around the campus and pick up trash after school, for like three weeks. I did my time, man...paid my dues.

Jump 20 years into the future. Evil Nerds have taken over the world, just like their expressions implied so long ago. We should have seen it coming. I know I did. What's a Lone Wolf Renegade like me to do though.

Nerds may rule the world..But, somewhere out in the quiet night, the Froggy Call of the Awkward Teen can be heard if you listen long enough. If you do, you'll notice that it's not just one. These voices are are legions. They're out there. Planning. Waiting. Being goofy.

A bit about Mexico. . .

(Aimee)
While in Mexico we visited Chichen Itza, a site of Mayan ruins.
We had a great tour guide:

(I'm not sure who the distractingly large-breasted woman was. Surprisingly, she didn't say much)

Mistakenly, we sought out people with sophisticated and expensive looking cameras with long lenses and special straps. This was a mistake because we thought with such fancy instruments they might have an idea how to frame a shot.

Observatory be-headed, pyramid truncated

We also sat on the beach/by the pool and relaxed (synonymous with Mexico, right?)

Darla requested a photo shoot while we were in Mexico

Vacations: Mindless vs. Cerebral.

In the world of Vacation Travel, it seems that half the fun is telling people before where you are going/went, what you did, and anything interesting that occurred. Points are acrued by numerous categories:

  • How far you travelled.
  • The cultural and historical value of the destination
  • The fellow travellers going to the destination.
  • The physical beauty of the destination.
I see vacations as two major types:

A.) The Vacation where you Experience and Learn
B.) The Vacation where you Eat and Relax

Option A has far more cache, in terms of Snob Factor. For example:

Trevor and Jaqueline biked through the Rain Forests of Costa Rica with a group of Ancient Greek Philosophy Professors. They made sweaters out of Goat Hair for Local Youth and built a bridge for an elderly Sheep Hearder named Quetzel Mais, who is 127 years old. Quetzel Mais gave them a Millenium Blessing and a whole town was renamed after them (and a few of the Professors).

Trevor and Jaqueline

Option B shows a stark Contrast. For example:

Chuck and Pam trekked through a Las Vegas Casino on a Golf Cart with a built-in Margarita Swirly dispenser. They got complimentary back Stage Passes to the Robert Goulet Show and both came close to eating the 72 ounce Steak (within one hour). Chip The Bartender named a whole new drink after them (the "Whoopsee-Daisy") and Pam won 65$ at the Roulette table.

Chuck and Pam

Now, I am not trying to be a smarty and make judgements on either type. Well, maybe a little, but I'm not trying to be mean. I personally like both types of vacations. And if I stole your picture (for my illustration purposes above), let me know and I'll remove it:)

Now that we are all Grownz Up and we're all Grownz up (Did you get the
reference?), there are new factors that contribute in determining where I want to vacation:

- Time
- Money
- Convenience

- Flight Time

I like the idea of the Cerebral Vacation, but I do not like the idea of the hoops I need to jump through.

So, the Cerebral will need to hold off for now, at least for this year. For 2007, we're going with Cancun, Mexico. Cancun isn't really considered exotic because it's close. Though this is true, it's one of the most beautiful places I've visited and I don't think Aimee would disagree. You may be thinking....not cerebral? What about the Mayan Ruins? Yes, yes, I know. Truth is, I would rather drink a Margarita (not too many) on the beach and eat Guacamole all week.

But, I think we'll see the ruins this time. So, Cancun Here we come..less than a week...!

We've done cerebral, btw....

The Jam Cam Ham

It's the perfect storm: A WNBA (Houston Comets) time-out "Jam Cam" collides with a flamboyant dancer. The results are captured on film. The rest is history.

The video presented to you now is one that I have viewed about 13 times (so far).

Aimee has already begun to mimic the staggeringly awesome moves of this fella. It's pure brilliance. The party starts about 14 seconds into it.

How a Frenchman changes a flat tire

Vincent, the Bizarro to my Superman and frequent nemesis, had to change a tire the other day. I noticed that he was removing the lug nuts in an entertaining manner.

Amused by his demented and evil peculiarity, I asked if I could take a picture. Vincent's sense of vanity compelled a positive answer.

Brilliant!

Aimee's thoughts on New England

The following two items exemplify Aimee’s perception of New England, where I grew up until the age of 14 years old. By doing Math, it is clear that percentage of my time on Earth is primarily OUTSIDE of New England, yet Aimee often addresses me as if I just shouted “Oh Captain My Captain” while standing on top of a Desk in front of Robin Williams a La The Dead Poets Society.

Oh Captain My Captain!

Thanks Boys, Thanks for Everything.

Whatever, Robin Williams. Stay away from the alcohol.

1.) The Tea Partay Video. A brief Description from wikipedia (the best web site in the Universe):

The release of Raw Tea line was backed up by viral video advertising campaign, based around short humorous musical commercial video Tea Partay (available on major video hosting sites), promoting the TeaPartay.com site. The video heavily exploits the preppie theme: it contains the song perfomed by so-called Prep Unit (P-Unit) band, performing in a style called prepsta (a pun on gangsta hip-hop style). The song contains the references to WASP lifestyle, one of which is holding a tea party (tea partay). The video widely spread in Internet, gaining more than 2.5 million views[2] (by April 2007) on YouTube site only.

Truth be told, I did wear ties with Whales on them and wore Docksiders, at times. But deep down, in my heart, I always yearned to speak with a Baltimore Accent and go to Towson University, my Alma Mater, where I ranked 537th in my graduating class...

2.) According to Aimee, everyone in New England looks like Delores Claiborne.

Yes, just ask Bridget Moynahan, from Long Meadow Mass!

Anyway, I kid. But Aimee best heed the words "You Reap what you Sow" in case we ever live in Texas.

Popeye Commerical Guy must feel pain

This new Popeyes TV commercial makes me want to punch myself in the face. Horrible music, with a dancing goofball. I call him Dylan.

I wish I could reshoot the commercial but have him get tasered at the end, instead of him dancing like he's got African Fire Ants in his pants.

----------------------------------------- ----------

"Hello, I will be your featured idot for the duration of this commerical. Prepare yourself for a ration of total crap."

----------------------------------------------------------------

"I'll take care of everything. I'm a DANCER."

------------------------------------ ----------------------

"Oh, almost forgot. I also prostitue myself for Popeye's Chicken."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

=======================================================

Here the whole trainwreck in all its glory

Now, here's HOW a commerical is DONE....

It's Grillin Season

Mothers Day, Birthdays, Fathers Day, or any day..Grilling Season has arrived.

This year, I'm considering a severe upgrade in my outdoor backyard Grill.

The first contender is called "Big Junior" by Leonard Ricks of Buxton, Georgia.

"Big Junior" features the following:

  • 227,000 BTU Twin Turbine, duel modulator gas enclosures.

  • 237 square feet of cooking area. This grill once cooked lunch for the entire population of Guam.

  • Duel Titanium Restricter Plates, allowing it to withstand a Category 7 Tornado and a small nuclear attack.

  • 2009 Model Flux Capacitor, allowing Time Travel in five dimensions.

  • A roll-out Sleeper Sofa.

My other Contender is called "Entscheidender Grill" which is German for Crucial Barbeque.

Entscheidender Grill features:

  • Retractable Dance Floor.

  • A Polynesian Boy-Servant named Palo Palo Swims with the Sharks.

  • Machine gun turret

I have a very tough decision ahead. Wish me luck.

Gourmet Food, Martial Arts, and Pyromania

Whoa..

Careful!

Who is this guy?????

I don't know what made me think of it, but my buddy, the flameboyant chef came to mind.

You say “my buddy?” Yes, this is my encounter with greatness(or his). When I lived in New York City, I worked for a company that managed web sites. His web site was managed by the company. He would call around once a month, with questions about his site. He was/is one of those guys that when he calls, he’s in a rush, with like 17 things going on. Then, he’ll proceed to talk for the next 15 minutes about these things. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked talking to him and he was a very interesting fella. He even came to visit once when he was in NYC. So, if he came to where I worked, to say hi to me, I think that passes the buddy qualification.

So, where ever you are, Mark Atlas, hope you're doing well.

I'll keep a rockin if you keep a
burning and saute'ing, and Kung Fu Fighting. (the rockin reference is to a movie, I don' t say that in real life).

Randomness

Favorite Current TV Commercial

Question Mark Guy.

This Guy lives near us, in Montgomery County Maryland. His Name is Matthew Lesko. I was with Co-workers going to My Favorite Lunch Place BAJA FRESH (just plain awesome) and we see one of those Boxy Scions pull up but it's covered in question marks. I knew it was him because he is famous for his 'question mark' suit.

Matthew Lesko (born 1943) is an American author and late-night television personality who has authored reference books telling people about how to get "free" money from the United States Government. He is popularly known as "that question mark guy" for the Riddler-like suit that he wears in his television commercials, infomercials, interviews, and in everyday use.

What a goofball...

Then, there's Stuart:

Stuart Larkin, arguably the most recognized character from MADtv, is a hyperactive and possibly autistic little boy played by Michael McDonald. He is almost always accompanied by his supposedly borderline alcoholic mother, Doreen, who scolds him for his various acts of childhood mischief. For example, he is often seen eating different junk foods, and when his mother inquires about them, he simply replies that he found them on the floor. His face is pale, and he often stares vacantly at nothing, possibly because of constantly-hinted-at childhood traumas, such as his dad leaving them. He hates going to his dad's house. Once, he said to his mother, "Mommy, Daddy called," and his mother, quavering, replies, "What did he say?" and Stuart replies, "He said he's glad to be out of this hellhole."

Morning Dog Walk

So each and every morning, I wake up a bit earlier to feed and walk Darla and Ginny (aka dogs). In the dead of winter (Feb, etc.) it is always dark and wet. I wear about 13 layers of clothing and walk have asleep in the darkness so the dogs can do their morning business in the woods. The flipside of this experience is that it's quite pleasant when the weather gets warmer. The best time of the year for this is Spring.

ALSO: It's a great waking up knowing that the Red Sox SWEPT the Yankees this past weekend.

Virginia Tech obituaries

(Matt)

Excerpts from Ryan C. Clark's obit:

...Ryan C. Clark's favorite place in the world was Camp Big Heart, a summer spot in Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Ga. Every summer for the past eight years, he spent two weeks at the camp for mentally impaired children, first as a volunteer counselor and, later, as music director

...."He had degrees in psychology, biology and English," his brother said. "A brainiac. He planned to pursue a PhD in neuroscience. He wanted to work with the mentally impaired."

....Ryan Clark was a resident adviser in the West Ambler Johnston dormitory, where he was killed Monday when he left his fourth-floor room to investigate a report of a dispute, friends said.

It seems that every person I hear about who died at Virginia Tech was exceptional. This Ryan above is just one of so many people who just really seemed like wonderful people which, to me, makes this whole thing so sad..special people dying.

One positive thing I see from watching the news these past few days is that there are still so many good kids in the world. From the students who survived talking about their fallen friends and family, it speaks volumes about the great kids at Virgina Tech. Virginia Tech should be immensly proud. This event placed the spotlight on them at their worst moment, but the result is that we see their best and their best is quite nice.

I'm not LISTENING, I can't help that I can hear you.

Washington-type ladies

Older, educated,Washington-type lady "This Imus thing-so, when he called them 'H-O' (and yes, she spelled it out) he meant what?

Middle aged, well spoken, Washington-type man next to her "It's black vernacular. Sometimes they use this term"

Washington-type lady-"So they call themselves this?"

Washington-type man-"Well, no."

Consensus:
Washington-type man spells it out:
"If you're a true liberal you're against it either way--slurs AND censoring speech."

Well, I find myself again at Panera. It's just easier on me-I don't want to explain it, it's really not that complicated. I have decided that I am going to begin my own private little 'overheard'
(
http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/ ) . The places where I find myself will certainly not offer the diverse, unique and sometimes jawdropping conversations that the streets, bars, parks and trains of NYC do. Despite the ethnic and cultural diversity of our nation's capital (and its metro area), the population is surprisingly homogenous in thought, word and action.

Their vocabulary is littered with buzzwords and isms such as:

'you're hiring the ideas' (as opposed to the person)

'furthermore'

'if you want to lose your spirituality, join a religious institution'

beginning every sentence with 'so'-whether is makes sense or not ( "So, ok-we're going to leave")

replacing 'like' with 'sort of'

saying 'to whom' instead of who (proper grammar is so pretentious :) )

(more to follow, the pools of Panera are pretty shallow)

I am on my computer, my head down again, clicking away and one of the women sitting at the table next to me has her back turned to me but glances over her shoulder periodically. She does this as if to say, you're not listening in, are you? My silent reply to her is -if you are going to talk in public- you are going to be overheard. I don't care what you are saying, I am just waiting for you to say something stupid.
After a bit, they leave and I am left with a blur of conversation from the table to my right. I am suspecting that they are not concerned with me at all. Maybe it's because my eyes are crossed and I am tapping away. Maybe it's because they are speaking Chinese.
~Aimee
